About Medical

The medical profession needs no introduction. It's inarguably one of the most respected and well-paid lines of work that requires unparalleled commitment and dedication. As Saint Augustine would say, "the greatest evil is physical pain" and the noble folks who are trained to heal it ought to be given a pat on their backs.

However, getting into the medical field is no mean feat by any standards. In all honesty, it's possibly one of the most challenging tasks that is equally rewarding. The science and practice of medicine requires great skill as the human body is the most complex creation there is. Due to these intricacies, the medical profession is divided into various different specifics with the sole aim of examining a person's physical and mental health and most importantly, treating it with absolute efficiency.

Being a doctor may sound like a distinguished honor - with families trying to coax their sons and daughters into taking it up as a career, but it takes years of patience and practice to reach the said designation.

Doing the beloved M.B.B.S is not the only facet of medical studies as there are various other streams that constitute the medical fraternity. In a broader sense, the medical spectrum is divided into two major categories: Medicine and Surgery.

As the names of the categories itself suggest, one deals with the medicinal aspect while the other takes care of the operative sector. Those who practice medicine are generally referred to as physicians while those who take up surgery as known as surgeons. Medicine includes different areas of specializations such as hematology, cardiology, endocrinology and critical care medicine while surgery contains neurosurgery, plastic surgery, and general surgery, just to name a few.

As you may have expected, it's pretty darn diverse. Wait till you see the courses and specializations available...

Course List:

The courses have been divided in categories such as Diplomas, Graduation Degrees, PG Diplomas, Masters, PhDs and certificate courses.

Diplomas courses in the medical field can be pursued right after Class 12 and most of the courses deal with various sectors in medicine. The duration is usually 2-3 years while there are short 6-12 month courses too.

Cutoff Marks

  • The basic requirement is to have cleared Class 12 (Science Stream) with a score of 50% in PCB. SC/ST candidates have a relaxed cut-off of 45%. However, top institutes such as AIIMS have a relatively higher cut-off for general quota students which stand at 60% and 50% for SC/ST. There is a minimum age-barrier of being at least 17 years old while enrolling, the maximum being 25 for general category and 30 for SC/ST/OBCs.
  • Taking an entrance exam is mandatory in order to get into any of the top medical colleges in India. The most widely-recognized and accepted test is the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET), which applies for both M.B.B.S and B.D.S. You're required to score 50% in PCB in the 12th grade to be eligible to take the exam.
  • Unreserved category (open) students are required to score 119 out of 720 in order to qualify the exams while SC/ST/OBCs and other reserved categories need to score 96/720 to qualify. Once qualified, you can apply in any of the medical colleges and universities in India.
  • NEET follows its own percentile system, wherein you need to refer to a certain formula to ascertain your percentile. NEET follows a rank-based results system, which is incorporated into the percentile system. To calculate the percentile, you would have to refer to this simple calculation given below:

[Total Appearing Candidates - Your Rank)/ Total Appearing Candidates] x 100 = Percentile

If 50,00,00 candidates appeared for NEET in total and your rank was 150, your percentile will be as follows:

[50,00,00-150)/150] x 100 = 99.97

The percentile cut-offs as released by NEET for all private and government medical and dental colleges is 50 percentile for Unreserved candidates (UR), 45 for Unreserved Physically Handicapped (UR-PH) and 40 for SC/ST/OBCs.

  • Top institutes such as All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) conduct their own entrance exams for admitting candidates.
  • It should be noted that B.Sc. courses don't require you to take an entrance examination and usually just need Class 12th clearance in PCB.

For dental studies, you need to have a B.D.S degree and recognition from the Dental Council of India or any of the verified state statutory bodies. You may also need to take an entrance test for a handful of universities. NEET for Masters in Dental Surgery (NEET MDS) should be sufficient enough.

Demand in the last few years

Can you believe it that there's a verified WikiHow page titled "How to encourage your child to be a doctor when grown up in 15 steps"? Here's the link to it if you're fascinated.

Coming to the point, being a doctor is a matter of pride and prestige, let alone it being a noble profession. Thus, the demand is never likely to drop as there will always be aspiring doctors being groomed in the school and higher secondary levels.

Nearly 55,000 doctors graduate every year and yet, according to a study, we are 5 lakh doctors short, as for 1,674 people there is just one doctor on an average, according to Hindustan Times. While the demand hasn't wavered considerably, it has taken a hit over the years with many short, lucrative and creative degree courses in management, banking, mass media and art gaining prominence. Students are beginning to prefer relaxed courses and their families too are open-minded enough to let them follow their passion.

However, recent trend suggests that many students are looking into medical-related fields such as Biochemistry, Nutrition, Microbiology and Lab Technology as it also offers a very good scope in the future. These are students who may not have made the cut in the NEET exams and instead of giving up on their medical dreams, diverted their attention to a different department.

Shifting to the murkier side, it's a dirty secret known extensively that many private colleges charge a bomb in the name of 'capitation' and donation fees. These colleges sell their seats as if it they were up for bidding in an IPL auction. And mind you, we're talking about the marquee players here!

MBBS seats in private colleges go out for as much as 50 lakhs to 1 crore while seats for an M.D. charge a startling 1.5 crore! As a result, if you've not cracked NEET or don't figure in the merit list coupled with a weak financial background, pursing a medical degree can be a distant dream.

This is one of the reasons many hopefuls have backed out in recent years for cheaper and shorter courses. It's high time such 'management quota seats' are a thing of the past as it is directly hindering many from realizing their dreams. That shouldn't stop you from dreaming big though, as the scope is infinite if you do manage to make it through....

Future Scope

  • It goes without a doubt that the medical domain has the best scope across all professions. The highly remunerative nature of the job is usually served as justification for the outrageous donation fees demanded by private colleges. For example, a fresh MBBS graduate will get a anywhere close to 50,000-60,000 a month, a figure that will multiply and could go up to 4-5 lakhs a month depending on the profile. Specialists such as gynecologists, cardiologists and pediatricians take home a fat 12-14 lakh annual package.
  • Highly-experienced medical doctors and professionals can pocket more than 50-60 lakhs per annum. The opportunities become even more rewarding if you intend on practicing outside India. For Foreign medical gradates who wish to practice in India, clearing the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) is all that's required to command a solid pay package in India.
  • Hospitals such as Fortis, Columbia Asia, Global Hospitals and AIIMS are some of the top recruiters waiting to hire medical professionals and doctors to fill in profiles such as surgeons, medical officers, lab technicians, nurses, medical directors, medical superintendents, radiologists, general physicians and so on. Doctors also choose to practice privately by opening up a small clinic in a comfortable location. The options, as you may have realized, are endless.
  • All the money aside, the medical sphere gives a sense of self-satisfaction as it involves the virtuous deed of helping the sick and needy. You can earn money but not respect. Those in the medical field are treated in high regard for their service and dedication irrespective of the financial background and that is something that gives a different sense of gratification after years of perseverance. It doesn't matter what your inclination is towards - money or the respect, the medical quest is well worth the journey.
