About Science
Everyone is familiar with the word science but coming up with a specific definition would be quite a task considering the magnitude of the term. You ask ten educated human beings and you may get ten highly contrasting definitions based on their perceptions.
In its fundamental sense, Science stands for the method of studying a systematically obtained and regulated assemblage of knowledge pertaining to the various activities and areas of our day-to-day life.
Let's simplify and break it down a bit. The infinite world of science is bifurcated into different departments such as:
- Natural sciences
- Applied Sciences
- Formal sciences
- Social sciences.
Natural deals with the laws of nature and objects in the physical realm while formal sciences touches upon the different systems and other theoretical principles. Social Science pertains to human beings, relationships and the society as a whole.
Natural sciences include Chemistry, Biology and Physics while computer science and mathematics are some of the disciplines that come under formal science. Psychology and Sociology are some of the subjects that come under the Social Sciences wing, which falls under the catalogue of course in the arts section. The fourth and final section under the massive domain of science is Applied Sciences which is mainly about applying the various scientific values and theories to existing real-world issues.
The divisions mentioned above are just some of the many topics that form a wide range of options to choose from.
When I say Science is an immense domain, I mean it! It really is incredibly vast. Engineering, building, education, research and development, medicine, electronics, consumer goods and food production, environmental safety, and many more - you name it and Science will have a crucial role to play in its workings.
In recent years, a majority of the youth is moving away from technical fields to creatively satisfying ones, but that hasn't taken the sheen away from traditional science courses, which are still the most popular across all streams. So if you wish to explore the intricate world of science in all its glory, you have a plethora of courses to choose from.
Demand in the last few years
Science students are in a league of their own when it comes to the options after completing higher secondary education. They have the choice of going for non-science courses too which their counterparts in the commerce and arts streams don't enjoy.
Despite the flexibility, B.Sc. remains one of the most widely picked bachelor's programmes for most of the relatively clueless 12th grade pass outs. B.A. and B.Com are the undisputed kings in terms of applications received but B.Sc. is picking up and fast.
Many are giving engineering and medicine a pass to give specific science courses a shot, which are shorter and have a larger scope of higher studies such as getting a master's degree and a doctorate.
Courses like B.Sc. in Botany and Zoology are finding many takers in recent years and the situation will only get better as almost every college offers a wide range of specializations to choose from. Almost 50 lakh students graduate from the science stream every year according to data from the Union Ministry HRD.
But do all of them end up being employed? Let's take a look at the career prospects....
